Which plastic food-service items are restricted in India, and what replaces them?
The Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules restrict identified single-use plastic items including plastic stirrers, cutlery, plates, straws and plastic sticks for balloons, flags, candy and ear buds. Bamboo equivalents of every one of those stick formats are permitted, which is why cafés, caterers and FMCG packers switched category by category.

Which items are affected?
The restriction list is written by item, not by industry: ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, flags and candy, plastic cutlery and stirrers, and thin carry bags. A café can therefore be compliant on cups and non-compliant on the stirrer beside them.
What do buyers replace them with?
Bamboo covers the stick formats one for one: a 1.3 mm bamboo stirrer for the plastic stirrer, a bamboo candy or lollipop stick for the plastic one, a bamboo-stick ear bud for the plastic-stick ear bud. Dimensions stay close enough that existing packing lines and cup sizes do not change.
How do you evidence compliance?
Hold a purchase invoice naming the material for every restricted-item replacement you buy. Our GST invoices name the item and its HSN code, which is what an inspector or an audit team asks to see.
